How long does it take for the coverage to be approved?
Underwriting of the plan can take anywhere from one to six weeks, depending on the information you provide on the Evidence of Insurability. If additional information is required from you or your doctor, Desjardins will notify you directly about the request and all medical information is confidential. Once approved, coverage becomes effective on the first of the month.

Are glasses and contacts covered?
There is $50 towards the cost of the visit to the optometrist, unfortunately there is no coverage for the cost of the lenses or contacts.

Are orthodontics covered?
Unfortunately there is no coverage for major dental services (i.e. crowns & bridges) or orthodontics. However, those services can be included in a cost plus claim.

What paramedical services are included?
Member’s are eligible to receive $400 per year reimbursed at 80% for the following services:
  • Acupuncturist
  • Audiologist
  • Certified Kinesiologist
  • Chiropractor
  • Dietitian *
  • Ergotherapist
  • Homeopath
  • Massage Therapist/Orthotherapist *
  • Naturopath
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Osteopath
  • Phsyiotherapist/Physiatrist/ Physical Rehabilitation/Sports Therapist
  • Podiatrist/Chiropodist **
  • Psychologist/Guidance Counsellor/Social Worker
  • Speech Therapist
    * services requires a written certification from a physician that such services are medically necessary and providing medical diagnosis – requested on an annual basis.
    ** reimbursement is provided only after Provincial Medical Allowance has been exhausted.

    How do I submit a health claim?
    Member’s can now view your health claim file on-line, print pre-completed forms and submit your claims for health care benefits more easily. Log on to www.desjardinsfinancialsecurity.com then click on consult my claims file in the Groups and Business section.

    Complete a Desjardins Financial Health Claim Form , enclose your itemized receipts and mail directly to:

    How do I submit a Long Term Disability?

    What is Cost Plus?
    Cost Plus is an option that can be exercised for all health and dental expenses which:
  • Exceeded the limits outlined in the Benefits Booklet.
  • Are not covered by the Group Benefits Plan.
  • Are covered under the “Canadian Income Tax Act.”
    Expenses which are not insurable by law (i.e. physicians’ fees in most provinces) cannot be reimbursed under the Cost Plus option.

    Cost Plus covers otherwise uninsured expenses, premiums are a deductible business expense, and benefits are non-taxable income for the employee.

    Cost Plus can be utilized to cover deductibles and coinsurance, amounts in excess or maximum benefit levels, excluded expenses (i.e. cosmetic dental treatment), and expenses that cannot be insured due to plan restrictions.

    How do I submit a Cost Plus Claim?
    Send a completed Cost Plus Reimbursement Form accompanied by all supporting paid receipts and a cheque from the policyholder payable to Desjardins Financial Security covering: - The amount of expenses to be reimbursed - Desjardins Financial Security’s administration fee - Any applicable premium and sales tax

    Desjardins Financial Security will then issue a cheque payable to the designated employee for the amount of the reimbursable expenses.
